About Me

Hello, my name is Gavina Lewthwaite. I am a veterinary naturopath concentrating my efforts on both large and small animals.

I was born on February 12, 1970 in Alford, Scotland. My family ran a farm raising beef cattle and sheep. At a very young age, I had a keen interest in agriculture and animal health. I used to spend time with the local veterinary surgeon on his rounds. I wanted to pursue a career in the agricultural field pertaining to animal health, so when I completed my secondary education, I began my studies in animal science at the University of Edinburgh. Within a short few months, an opportunity arose for me to go to America and work with an uncle of mine, who was an agricultural scientist, and was there and involved in a commercial farming project. He invited me there to work with him because of my affinity toward the subject of agriculture, and this seemed to be an interesting endeavour. Within three months I had moved there and was engrossed in this adventure. I had planned to re-enter college to continue my studies in animal science, however over the next several years this did not come to pass immediately.

Throughout these years, I received a very comprehensive educational experience and had become aware of the alarming aspects of common food production for our animals and the detrimental effects it has on their health. We worked closely with veterinarians, farmers and others in the animal industry. The direct relation a modern diet had on farm, domestic and equine animal health was appalling. There were obviously environmental aspects as well; however, the basic underlying factor contributing to the manifestation of new diseases coming to pass was that of diet almost exclusively.

It was at this time, with my recent activities, and my experience working with animals as well as various other aspects of agriculture, I decided to apply to college and obtain a degree in naturopathy. During the time working with my uncle, I encountered several holistic and naturopathic animal practitioners. Their philosophy of healthcare was exactly the same as what was going on inside my own head. The idea of actually healing sick animals, rather than suppressing symptoms, really appealed to me logically. With my compassion for animals and my belief in the natural healthcare thought process, I was convinced that a career along these lines would greatly benefit myself mentally, and ultimately the animals. Although later in life than usual, in 1998, I was accepted into the Australian College of Natural Animal Medicine and began my studies in veterinary naturopathy early in 1999. The curriculum was challenging, however, it gave me a very comprehensive view of all aspects of natural animal health. In 2005, I graduated with my VND diploma.

I went back to my home of Alford for most of 2007 due to family issues, however, in March 2008, I moved back to America, this time establishing a residence in the state of Georgia. A dear friend of mine, and fellow practitioner, Dwayne Hubbard, had invited me there to join him on his adventures.
