The Red Arrows story turned out to be completely untrue! Not much point commenting on it...

I adore Michael Palin. If there was only one man left on the planet I would like it to be him. We go back a long way, Michael and me. I've watched him mature like a fine wine over the years, I've laughed till I cried at his jokes and facial gymnastics and got terribly excited at the wicked twinkle in his eye. His carbon footprint however, has been nothing short of diabolical, having travelled thousands and thousands of miles making tv films, and he's been doing it again with his new european series. I really wish he hadn't. I turned it off the other day. I was so disappointed. Here was an opportunity to show how he, and the world, has changed since he began his travelling shows all those years ago. Here was a chance to remind his very respectful audience, and by his actions demonstrate to them, how we can no longer fuel our lust to have everything. He could have done this, taken the inevitable flak that would have followed like the giant of a man he is, and maybe it would have resonated in an enduring and meaningful way. People have always followed their heroes - and my hero could have led some of the people some of the way.

Hello Tricia :)

I hear what you're saying. But don't you think it's more the fault of the BBC (and other channels) for offering people like Michael obscene amounts of money to make these progs, and funding all those flights?? Paradoxically, they are the ones who are always showing us programmes about global warming & climate change, but....! (And I don't know if you know it, but Palin flew back to England several times for a 'break' in the middle of making that series!)

Like it or not, air flight is here to stay - there's no going back now. And that schedule flight to Benidorm (say!) will still go there whether you, I, or anyone else is on it!

I think this 'personal carbon footprint' stuff is just another ploy to make us feel guilty (amongst many others) and take the flak away from those who are really messing up the planet. I fly perhaps once a year, and have no intention of changing this. I highly resent having to pay huge taxes on said flight, which is often 3 times the actual cost of the ticket! :(

Politicians are the worst culprits in this area. They are the ones who fly most, slap on the taxes, and flight costs never come out of their own pockets. Disgraceful. I thought video conferencing was invented to avoid this!!

Anyway...that's my 2p worth....

Hi
that email you got Tricia probably in some way came via one of my brothers who is a Lt Col in the British Army. Just as an aside to the carbon footprint issue I actually think it very sad that the Red Arrows might not be able to fly at London 2012 regardless of any fuel emissions - but anyway.................

I adore Michael Palin too and really resonate with your feelings about how he has "touched" you over the years. I profess to being very ignorant on the whole envrionment issue - I am one of those awful people who only do my bit with recycling in the correct bins and giving to charity shops rather than wasting something I don't want but that could be used by others.

Helen has a very valid point about the "masses" and flights etc. So I wonder Tricia if you were to (or indeed do) travel the world at any point - how do you go about it and remain consciousness of your own carbon footprint? Not trying to be antagonistic - just interested.

love and light
Caz x

hi caz!
thank you for replying.. i haven't been in a plane since 1997 - and before that it was 1971! i'm not a big fan of air travel (no really), so i guess it's easier for me. I haven't had any sort of a holiday for three years actually, and then it was a long weekend in Berkshire! I just live my life in the way i feel most comfortable, and take pleasure in very simple things really - like sitting by the river, walking in the woods or cloud watching - not exactly exciting I'll admit, but i get a lot out of it. I've found there's so much to be gained from simply 'being' - a depth of meaning in life that nothing bought or owned can give.. a kind of freedom really. Anyway, it's just my opinion..
many blessings...
