We need help!

In February 2005, we bought a magazine that had been going for 14 years. It was a single-colour, free, New Age, provincial magazine that was making a loss. In the last 2 years we have turned it into a national magazine (the retail outlets have increased from 50ish to 385), we have more than doubled the subscriber numbers and expanded the advertiser base. We have gone to colour, are charging for it and the conent has become more mainstream, so the we can get "The Message" to more people - rather than the theoretical New Age, we now feature people who have had life challenges and what they've done (in spite of or because of) to create better lives. We also have organics, humour, horoscopes, giveaways, vegetarian recipes and articles from a whole range of "therapists", in a diverse range of areas - physical, emotional and spiritual.

The magazine is "Input" and you can see it at www.inputmag.co.nz

Our problem is that, despite the above improvements (which took all our life savings) the magazine just is not making enough for us to live on. My partner, Anna, has had to get a full-time job and I have a part-time one. Everyone who sees the magazine just loves it and our perception is that there are just not enough people who know about it - if we could afford an effective marketing campaign, it would help.

So, we see several solutions:
1. Sell the magazine
2. Bring an investor in
3. Have a marketing person/organisation run a campaign for a percentage of the sales
4. Give the magazine up

We know that we do not have the answers right now so does anyone out there have any ideas, please?

Hi Phillip

I can't directly help you but there is a magazine in the UK which was promoted by a supermarket chain (ASDA) and is now sold in W H Smiths - large stationery/newsagent/music chain.

I have no idea on the terms of trade etc that they did but perhaps you would like to contact them as they might be able to help you or at least give you some pointers. They were focussed on the paranormal and alternative therapies etc so possibly some similarities there. Their phone number is (UK) 0113 2863939, www.visionmagazine.uk.com, sales@visionmagazine.uk.com.

Alternatively there is a club in the Nottinghamshire area of the UK called 'the Entrepreneurs Club' which is a showcase for people seeking investment. Now I'm not suggesting you would get support from the UK but perhaps there is something similar in NZ?

Anyway, I wish you good luck with your project and hope that you can increase circulation sufficiently to make it a viable business. I have had a quick look at your website and it looks like a nice magazine.

Hi
I own a magazine - www.livingspiritmagazine.com
Take a look, if you like what you see, we may be able to partner with you by adding a selling space for magazines on to the site.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Julie
