My experience is that a combination of garlic, echinacea, and Vit. C at the first sign is the most effective way to beat the flu and colds. Certainly better than most OTC remedies.

I keep my allergies under control and that has helped in many ways. I take garlic, cats claw, and vit C daily along with other supplements. Since doing those two things I haven't been ill at all.....for over 3 years. I think that's a pretty good record.

A little colloidal silver added to the above garlic and echinacea combo will be of benefit in extremely stubborn and somewhat aggressive fluey symptoms. Also, make sure the echinacea is the 'angustifolia' variety, and that poor little virus doesnt stand much of a chance!

Dale....Do you agree that you need to start taking the echinacea fairly soon before the flu/cold season to build up the immune system?

I've read about studies which were done with the herb that found it didn't give any extra
protection against colds but I think possibly they were only taking it at the first sign of a cold.
My favourite remedy is my Grandma's recipe for elderberry syrup - which if I take it when I first feel my throat sore I never get a cold....:)

I am a firm believer that echinacea should be taken at the first signs. If you look at much of the traditional texts, this was the context in which it was used.

I dont see any major harm with taking it throughout the winter, but Im happier giving it as a medicine as and when a medicine is needed. It doesnt come into the cateegory of a tonic herb. If people are looking for a tonic for nourishing the immune system and staving off illness - id tend to go for herbs along the lines of siberian ginseng, or reishi mushroom.

If I see the signs of a cold or any illness coming on I "fast" simply drinking water. It diverts the energy needed for the digestion process into healing and ridding the body of any incoming invasion... it ensures that illness rarely takes hold, especially if nipped in the bud before it gets out of hand.

Perhaps not the approach for everyone, although, for those that may be interested I can certainly vouch for its effectiveness.
