Any advise please!
I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid when i was 19,after I had my son,and chose to take natural suppliments which I did so for a coupl of years then I was feeling fine so I stopped taking them and would go back on them on and off depending on how I felt.
Just over a year ago I started working a busy job, which was fine except I didnt notice that I was getting tireder and tireder and 3 months ago I collapsed and my body started shuttin down -very scary!! - and so basically I surrendered and started takin Levotyhroxine. After 2 weeks I felt great!! So I went back to busy job but about a week ago , all the original syptoms of an underactive thyroid came back and I started havin horribl side effects from the Levothyroxine. Why is this??
I went to my doctor and he was no help at all :( he just said I need to perservere til I get my levels ryt.
I'm now 30 and a solo mum, I need to be able to do my job, not just for financial reasons but also bcoz I love it!
I am postive and do believe that I can heal my body, its just a matter of knowing what to do!
If anyone has any suggestions that could help please let me know!
:)
thanks

Hi Sarah

I would recommend a book by Barry Durrant-Peatfield Your Thyroid and How to Keep It Healthy: The Great Thyroid Scandal and How to Survive It

It is available on Amazon.

Your Thyroid and How to Keep it Healthy

So agree, Yasmin!

I attended his seminar which was amazing, just like the book.

The thyroid gland is too complex a subject - but he covers it all!!

Hi Sarah,
I have not heard of the book Yasmin links to, it sounds good though.
Firstly, let me just say, your thyroid is only part of your whole endocrine system, if your thyroid is acting up, either over or under, then there is a problem with your whole system. Secondly, the pituitary gland actually makes thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), so the problem may be in the pituitary/thyroid link, and the pituitary gets its instructions from the hypothalimus. (I have put on Youtube a movie on how to balance your endocrine system, search jonb523 on Youtube) and one of my students who has done this course, is now living in England. If you wish, I can give you her details. Herbs are also the way to go with thyroid/endocrine problems, find a good herbalist. Iodine tincture, the stuff you put on cuts, painted on the body in about a 1" circle morning and night, will help the thyroid, if that's where the problem is. Also, have your liver checked, as the liver is the real controller of the whole hormone system, if the liver is off, so are the hormones.
Hope this helps.

Ooooops Sarah, I didn't realise you were in NZ. Where abouts are you in NZ?

Yasmin, taking iodine orally is good, but how do you know when you have had enough?

I don't take iodine, but one way of checking whether you have an underactive thyroid gland or overactive, is by using the coloured tincture of iodine.

Using a cotton wool bud, you paint a 10p piece size of the tincture on the top inner thigh before bedtime. In the morning, if the colour has disappeared, it can indicate an underactive thyroid, if it has gone bright orange, over-active and if it stays the same then it is normal.

One person I know who was on thyroxine did the test and it disappeared within an hour! She found when visiting her doctor, she needed more thyroxine and felt better.

The blood test for an underactive thyroid is one of the most inaccurate blood tests in this country. The measurement they use to gauge the result is low compared to America, and there are a lot of people wondering around with an underactive thyroid - not that thyroxine is the most desirable treatment. There are natural ways.

That's brill, I'm going to try that! Are you saying this test has proved more accurate than the blood test (which I know is notorious)? That's amazing!

I'd like to test people for a hidden allergy to iodine; I'd be interested to see if, once the allergy was cleared, the test came out differently. Jon, what would you say about that? I've never tried it, but it sounds like it could be the solution for some people?

Thank you lovely ppl for your helpful suggestions! :)
4 days ago I stopped taking Levothyroxine, yes I no this is against the law(lol),but I couldnt stand how I was feeling and I figured that as long as I am taking something natural to support my thyroid I should hopefully be ok so Ive been taking thyroid support which has the glandular extract in it,I havent been feeling prefect but I have been feeling so much better!!!!
I have an appointment next week to get muscle tested on which natural suppliments I could take so hopefully am on the right track.
And yea I wouldnt be suprised if there is something more going on than just the thyroid....Oh to feel normal again...
Jon,I am in Nelson :) also known as paradise!

Anna, I use the iodine test a lot and find it very useful. From what I gather, it is very reiliable indeed, and apparently used by a lot of practitioners. I find it more accurate than the blood test.

Also, Sarah, there is usually adrenal exhaustion behind thyroid problems, and that gland needs to be treated by supplements and diet.

'Adrenal Fatigue' - The 21st Century Stress Syndrome by James L. Wilson is comprehensive in the entire treatment. I attended his seminar also, and he is a stunning speaker.

Ann , thanks for reminding me about the test - I'd heard about it somewhere before but forgotten. I'll have to look at the links above as well - there seems to be an awful lot of women with this condition in my experience.

Cheers J :)

Sarah, see if you can find a health shop that sells Bushlore, they have a very good herbal remedy for hormone balance. A good Naturopath who uses muscle testing is the way to go, I'm sure there is someone down your way. Also please view,

Jayne, the iodine test works extremely well, and IMO, is 10 times better than a blood test.

Just an update, I have never felt better since comin off Levothyroxine!! Have been taking natural adrenal and thyroid support and I feel normal again and am extremely greatful for that!!
I was told by alot of ppl that once u take Levothyroxine you have to be on it for life but if anyone out there is havin bad side effects and not enjoying life I would recomend natural alternatives but make sure you get muscle tested for the correct one and correct dose.Worked for me anyways :D

Well done, Sarah, you've done yourself proud!

Now that you're feeling more human again, you can take some time to really nurture and care for yourself. Trust your body completely to do its job, with your support.

I'm really inspired by your experience and your tenacity at dealing with this in your own way.

Bless you!
