Hiya

I'm one of those "lucky" people that can eat pretty much anything and never put on weight. The only time I managed to put on weight over the last 5 years was when I was writing my PhD thesis (i.e. sat in front of a computer for 12 hours a day, not exercising and getting through 3-4 packs of pringles a week).

The problem is, when I do regular exercise I start to lose weight. I don't want to lose any more weight, but do want to get fit.

I'd also rather eat healthily than cram myself full of calories to maintain my weight.

I avoid wheat and oats because they give me IBS. Last year a nutritional therapist had me on a cave-man diet which really cleared up the IBS but I physically couldn't eat enough calories to not lose weight. I've had my thyroid function checked loads of times, always normal.

So if anyone can recommend any wheat-free "wonder-foods" that will help me keep the weight on while I exercise I'd appreciate it.

Steph

Hello
I have been small all my life....my average weight was 71/2 stone - which I was for years. Right up until last year when I was sick (with stress - nothing life threatening) and went down to 6 stone. It took me 6 months to get back my weight but I did it by eating three good meals a day. I did'nt over exercise because you don't want to use up more calories than what you take in so I walked and when I snacked I ate nuts, dried fruit and veggies. As my weight crept back on I started to ride my bike and lift 5lb weights. Iam now a very healthy 8 stone and feel wonderful. I now ride 5 miles a day and have so much energy - which is'nt bad for a 51 year old. The best way to put on weight is to do it gradually....and mild exercise at first.
I got a lot of ideas from Gillian Mckeith from You are What you eat, tv programme.
She has a website which is mainly to lose weight but there is a part for putting on weight. It worked for me. It is a very interesting site. I also meditate and try not to worry about anything. You can lose weight just by being stressed!!! The adrenaline uses up calories!!! I do believe she may have some ideas for those who are intolerant to some foods...it's worth a try and Gillian certainly knows what she is talking about!
I always start the day with fruit, then a bowl of high fibre cereal. I do snack all day but I have rice cakes with jam on, or dried fruit which gives you sugar for energy and not a rush of energy like ordinary sugar will do to you. I get a big bag of mixed nuts and dried fruit and munch on those all day. Some nuts are fattening - but that's ok...that's what us skinnies want. For lunch I'll have a Subway or a tuna salad..(a BIG portion)...then dinner is always lots of veggies with chicken or pork (I keep away from red meat and NEVER touch burgers or hotdogs)....I am going to start making my own biscuits and bread as the bread over here is just filled with chemicals etc etc....
(I am British living in Florida)....oh yes....I drink loads of water to flush out the kidneys and it keeps my skin from drying out. Lots have people have commented on how good my skin is for my age....start now.....
Anyways...I hope this helps you. How much do you weigh and how tall are you?
Iam 5ft 3ins....from about 18years old to now I have stayed around the same weight. Sometimes it's just in your genes. My Mum is tiny and so are both of my sisters...we are all around 71/2 to 8 stone.
My doctor used to say "As long as you are healthy....."
Namaste
Debra
