Found this vid on youtube about how easy it is for people to deny others access to websites .Apparently this often occurs when some people cant argue their case or answer back ...nor can they be seen to ban people for what would be an unjustifiable reason ( afterall they,ve got to keep up appearances ) so they sneakily do it through the back door, thinking theres a good chance you wont notice

By gradually denying more and more your access through use of your ip adress and a proxy server . Its even got a name . Its called cloaking .

We only tend to think of China and other "commie" dictators doing such a thing .However one might be very suprised find it coming from more unlikely sources ... Seemingly when all you get " is server not found "when you try to enter a particular site , and not others ,you should ask yourself is little brother about!!!

Shed light on what precisely?

We'll you run a website Andy .. so surely you must know what can and can't be done with someones ip adress ......I remember you had eveyones clocked up on screen for awhile when David Coulson was playing silly buggers.

It's not a subject I know very much about. My technical knowledge doesn't extend that far.

Certainly I know that you can identify the IP address of anyone accessing your site. However an IP address isn't unique to an individual but to the ISP they're using. So if a hundred people all using the same ISP came here, they would all show up as having the same IP.

So in theory we could probably prevent someone using a particular IP address from accessing the site. However this wouldn't really work for several reasons.

1) You wouldn't be blocking one person, but possibly many hundreds or thousands of people
2) Even using the same ISP people will often be assigned a slightly different IP address everytime they log on to the internet. So the IP address you have today could be different from the IP address you have tomorrow.

To my knowledge, IP blocking is only effective if you want to block out an entire bunch of people. like say if you're China and you want to block your citizens from accessing large parts of the internet.

Hope that makes sense.
Andy

Thats interesting Andy ....so while we're on the subject there seemingly is no effective way that a single computer could be blocked accessing a website , by some means or other ?.......you'd by implication block others as well ....but then that wouldnt necessarily be a reason not to do it .

That's my understanding yes. There's no way a single computer can be blocked access to a website without blocking a whole load of other computers too - ie many other people using the same Internet Service Provider - although by blocking one particular IP address you wouldn't be blocking every single person from one ISP. You'd effectively be blocking people from a particular geophysical area. For example people accessing the internet through BT Internet in London wouldn't be assigned the same IP address as people using BT Internet in Glasgow or Manchester etc.

Your comment "....but then that wouldnt necessarily be a reason not to do it ." is to some extents true. I know that occasionally discussion forums will use this tactic as a last resort in order to deal with 'trolls' if they persistently keep rejoining (usually after having been banned) to cause more trouble. However, it's not a particularly effective tactic because all said troll needs to do is either change ISP, use an internet cafe, or use an anonymous proxy service.

I don't know have all the technical knowledge about this sort of thing- maybe there is a logical explanation why we couldn't get on from this computer - I do think its odd as John didn't go on that often anyway.

Another strange thing is that John couldn't log on to HL when he visited me down south either - and I couldn't log out. I didn't think much of it untill we got back up north and neither of us could get on up here ............ so sorry for the delay in getting back to people who had PM'd me.

All I can say is that we could both get back on after John asked Neil to put the first post of this thread up. You can't blame John for feeling that this can't be just co-incidence.

The mystery remains.........!
