What is SEO?
SEO stands for "search engine optimization". SEO is a process of arranging a web site's content to obtain high rankings in various search engines.
Why do you need SEO?
When potential customers perform a search over the internet for a generic term such as "Chicago life coach", they typically enter these keywords into a major search engine such as Google or Yahoo. This search returns over 4 million and 9 million results in Google and Yahoo respectively. If you are the unlucky business to be ranked as number 1,024,356 it is highly unlikely that anyone will ever find you. The first few entries on the top of the page will be listed as "sponsored results". These are listings that paid to be on top. I find that a great deal of internet users ignore the sponsored results and skip directly to the first of the free listings which are usually numbered, ten entries per page. Most people only search the first two pages of search results with the majority only browsing the first three to five entries on each page before deciding on a chosen listing. This means that the cost of securing a good domain name, your hosting fees and marketing efforts are for naught if your listing is ranked any lower. SEO is the tool that internet marketers use to get ranked higher in the search engine results so that potential customers can find them. If no one knows you are there, sales are impossible.
