No electricity!

We had a power cut yesterday at 5pm and it brought home to me how much we all rely on that mysterious force called 'electricity'.
The ring road was in utter chaos because there were no traffic lights and nobody wanted to give way (that's a whole other blog!). When I eventually got home from work I said "we'll have to watch the local news to see what's happened" to which my husband replied "how are we going to do that with no electricity? dur!" (yes I know, very blonde moment).
I then thought how restricted we are without it; people were trapped in Sainsbury because the doors wouldn't open, shops couldn't trade because of the tills, petrol pumps didn't work, no telly, no radio, no internet, no ATMs, and for those who have no gas or a barbie - no way to cook dinner.
How much more complicated have we made our lives for the sake of convenience, and how we have lost the skills to live without the addition of things that are all meant to makeour lives 'easier'.
The electricity came back on an hour later and life returned to normal, however maybe we should consider how we'd cope if the power was cut for longer.
