Meditations on-line, Do You Own the Music Copyrights?

Friday, October 10th, 2008 4:37 AM

G'day,

on behalf of an unknown UK musician, my business partner (the muso Glenn) and myself are "unamused" at the current lack of others business ethics with regards to music use in the background of on-line products. Notably by another local "Spiritual" businesses on-line practices.

Can't find a local musician?

Please remember that the musicians on My-Space are also in business and most would probably Love to work with your business.

Everybody, including You & I know about the basic ideas behind what is called plageurism.

At school it was referred to as “cheating” by “copying” our assignment content word for word from the closest encyclopedia (or these days, Wikipedia).

Despite the publicity over the whole Napster thing (and perhaps due to the start of Limewire) there appears to be  a mental block at the idea of using other peoples music as background for video and audio presentations on the internet.

Metallica excluded, MOST muscicians are actually happy to receive the exposure. Especially those who (like you & I) are trying to make a name for themselves in their niches.

Just like us, these musicians have invested alot of time and money in preparing their product (cds & mp3s) for sale. That is how you got to hear Their Work in the first place.

Just like us, these musicians have organised to use Joint Venture partners (physical & on-line stores & wholesalers). They pay them to sell their product.

Just like us, they need to eat and pay electricity bills to live.

As I said before MOST muso’s are happy to have their music used WITH their knowledge. Most would love the opportunity to JV with you.

How?

Contact Them!

Let them know what you are doing. Let them see Your Work and Why you want to use Their Material.

Offer them the chance to “advertise themselves” through Your Product, Your Website, Your list.

Why Bother?

B.B.E or Basic Business Ethics. You are a professional, so are they. Help them to Help You and both your businesses will grow.

If You do not need their work enough to enter in a business arrangement with them, do NOT use their music.

If you want kudos for your own product RESPECT the others who are helping you create it.

Musicians are in business too. They will badmouth your lack of B.B.E all over their social networking sites. Isn’t it better to have them promoting You on those sites instead?

Take the time, write them or phone them. JV partnersips will work for BOTH of you.

They may even offer to compose an exclusive score for your business!

P.S how impressed would YOU be if a musician redubbed YOUR meditation vocals onto their music as a "demo" for what they do? ...and didn't even say it was your vocals they were using!
