Reiki Symbols

By Carolyn Maloney

There is a great difference in the thinking forms creating almost a lost connection to our environment. Interest and entertainment are more fun than appreciation and awareness. The Native American physical world images are different; Corn Maiden to the Navajo means prosperity and good fortune. Corn is the diet staple and is an appreciated awareness of energy to all within that nation. Fishing and coconuts to the Hawaiians are a diet staple and deserve the same consideration of life energy and stability.

In the current day mainland thinking, corn is good especially if it is sweet. Fish are good for you and taste ok, however, coconuts are almost too much trouble if you have to open them yourself. Maybe that is why Reiki is good for individuals. As someone once told me lose your mind and return to your senses(a nice pun on Sensory Perception).

In the Japanese and Chinese language one form of the written word or language is Kanji. Kanji is images of thought patterns according to what it needed to convey information. One image resembles a tree, while another appears to be a stick figure of a man. When placed together they can mean the woodcutter or the source of something related to man and entirely different. The forms of the image as it relates to the other images, depend on the time and space involved. The language and the culture of Asian countries are more intuitive than our language. The symbol or picture is our tool to understanding as well but we rely less on symbols than we do words. In our evolved rushing around, to much to do culture, a philosophy or thought is an absolute truth when printed in the newspaper or a public form. Our media is given great credit for reporting the truth or actually the truth as they see it as a individual corporation may dictate.

Within Reiki you will learn some symbols that will bring your awareness to attention and give your thought wings. These symbols allow us to slip past our mental programming and focus our intent and understanding to an unlimited realm. This is a reality that changes and flows with the individual perception.

As you grow and evolve with these pictures that have created the mythology or poetry of spirit. They become a physical form in themselves and are held in a different prospective in your mind. Some of the symbols are actual Kanji or Japanese writing. When they make a symbol and intone the sound it has a different meaning to them and is more of a ceremony of intent than a magical symbol for healing. The Japanese rely more on their intuition for communication on all levels.

In our own culture, one of the symbols of intent for the Cuendero, Santaria or Peruvian shaman is the same cross used by the churches, which we are well acquainted with. The drawing of the cross symbolizes balance of Spirit to Form (North to South) and birth to death (East to West).

Symbols are the tools for the focus of your intent. Currently, there is much conflict and frustration about symbols in Reiki. Which symbol is for what and what is correct or not correct as well as the great power of another. It has been found that Usui-san did not use symbols and that other teachers taught them as a tool for us to use in the beginning of their training. Yes! in our culture we do need the tools at least for a while. However, Too many tools seem to get you lost in the tool shed instead of growing in the garden.

There are many other forms of healing where symbols are used. Peruvian Shamans use different geometric shapes and colors. Kabala has an entire pattern that includes symbols and words in many aspects on the Tree of Life. All religions and cultures have unique symbols or forms that give them the focus needed. Your body, mind and spirit are your truth and your symbols are within the echoes of your consciousness. That's why Reiki San Antonio blends in SA cultural symbols and thoughts of spirit as we in San Antonio understand them.
