About Me

FLORENCE, OR – Local comedy writer, Karen Lee, relaunches the Laughter Rx eNewsletter online, to inject more humor into stressful lives, April 1, 2012, coinciding with the 36th annual celebration of National Humor Month. Lee published the original Laughter Prescription Newsletter dedicated to the healing power in humor in print from 1989-1996.

The monthly newsletter was a support network in print for seriously and chronically ill patients, caregivers, friends and family. Ms. Lee had taken a course in how to write and perform standup comedy. This led to selling jokes to Joan Rivers and other comedians, disk jockey/actor Jay Thomas, selling one liners to joke collections and publications for speakers such as “Robert Orben’s Current Comedy.”

Inspired by a girlfriend with breast cancer, Lee realized, “you can be seriously ill, but not terminally serious”, and began exploring the world of humor and health.

Eventually the Laughter Prescription Newsletter was written up in over 22 newspapers throughout the country, featured in magazines ranging from American Pharmacy to Children’s Television Workshop.

Lee’s career highlight was an invitation to speak in 1993 as part of the prestigious Baylor College of Medicine “Compassion and the Art of Medicine” series and an interview on CNN-FN describing why “BellyLaughs are Good for the Bottomline”.

Each issue features informative articles on various aspects of humor, benefits of laughter, funny quotes, and original humor written by Karen Lee. There are links to books and resources for further discovery.

The 4 page eNewsletter is offered at no charge and will arrive on the first of the month via email. New subscribers will receive a document detailing how to create your own “First Aid for the Funnybone Kit”, giggle gadgets to jumpstart the laughter for use in emergency situations when you cannot think of a good reason to smile.
